Infrastructure Improvements Underway in Cooleemee

Cooleemee continues to make progress on several important infrastructure projects that will help preserve our community, improve our streets, and protect some of our historic buildings.

Zachary House Chimney Repair

One of the projects recently completed was the repair of the chimney at the historic Zachary House.

The chimney had developed a significant lean and had become a concern for the safety and preservation of the structure. Rather than simply removing it, we were able to carefully address the problem by reducing the height of the chimney by approximately two-thirds and securing the remaining portion.

An added benefit is that we were able to save and preserve the original brick that was removed. That brick can be used for future repairs to the Zachary House or other historic structures in our community.

Preserving our history is important, and we are pleased that we were able to find a solution that addressed the safety issue while also allowing us to preserve valuable historic material.

Main Street Improvements

Another major infrastructure project is taking place on Main Street.

As part of the construction of the new water treatment plant, the street has experienced significant construction activity. Davie County is now replacing the affected portion of Main Street and bringing the roadway back to the condition it was in before the water treatment plant project began.

We appreciate Davie County’s commitment to completing this work and restoring the roadway for the residents and businesses who use Main Street every day.

The new water treatment plant represents a significant investment in the future of our community and the rest of the county and we are looking forward to seeing the project completed.

The ribbon cutting for the new water treatment plant is scheduled for October 16.

I want to thank everyone who has been involved in these projects—from our town staff and commissioners to Davie County and the contractors who have worked to keep these improvements moving forward. A special thanks to Ron Bivens who found a contractor for the chimney repair.

These may seem like individual projects, but together they represent the continued effort to maintain our infrastructure, protect our history, and invest in Cooleemee’s future.
