Serving Up Smiles and Pickleball Court Upgrades in Cooleemee

(L to R) Anapaula Iturralde from Ecuador, lives in Clemmons; Michelle Cameron, Cooleemee;  Kienan Beasley, Mocksville; Tina Boughton from Colorado; Brian Boughton from Colorado; Cecil Cameron, Cooleemee

While walking one morning, enjoying the cool crisp air, I decided to walk over and meet the people who were playing pickleball.  As I got closer, they stopped playing and I said, “We have an ordinance in this town that prohibits playing pickleball on Sundays.”

Even though we were outside, you could still hear a pin drop.

I quickly told them I was joking, and I was so happy to see them taking advantage of what we have to offer our community. Thank goodness we all laughed.

They were happy to hear that the old, outdated fence will soon be replaced with a new black one, and the borders for the pickleball perimeters will be painted properly.

Pickleball is known as the number one growing sport, and most communities are including these courts for exercise of all ages.  We are proud to announce our new addition on our website and encourage all visitors to share it with friends and family.

Organizational Announcement

It is with both sadness and congratulations that I am announcing Steve Corriher will be resigning his position of Town Clerk and Finance Officer to accept a new opportunity with Lowe’s effective August 4, 2025. Sadness in that we are losing a tremendous asset to the town with Steve’s departure, and congratulations that he will be moving to a great opportunity for him and his family.

Steve has always had a great love for the Town of Cooleemee. In addition to his current role as Town Clerk and Finance officer, he has served terms as the Mayor of Cooleemee. In those roles he has served on many boards and worked with the other municipalities, the county, and the state. Steve’s experience in all these areas has helped the town work through some difficult times. Steve will be working part-time as we go through the process of replacing him.

On a personal note, Steve has been a tremendous help to me in my role as mayor. His knowledge and experience along with his willingness to share those with me and the commissioners has helped make things run much smoother for our town.

Please join me in thanking Steve for all he has done and continues to do for Cooleemee, and wish him well in his new opportunity.

Judy Webb Shines as Grand Marshal of a Memorable July 4th

July 4th was on a Friday this year and having Judy Webb as our Grand Marshall made it one of the best. Judy is very well known in this little town of ours. Not only has she spent many hours raising money by selling fundraiser tickets for good causes, but she has also consistently taken care of the elderly on a regular schedule by going to their home to do whatever was needed.

Judy started the Senior Christmas Party in memory of her parents and had been organizing it for 32 years until her recent retirement. When I think of Judy, said Mayor Jeff Smith, I think of her hands. She’s always ready to serve, she’s simply the face of our town and that’s a good thing.”

Judy is someone you can’t turn down, she’s a short ball of energy, with a sweet voice and a great smile to complete the package. Every town needs a Judy like we have and we so appreciate her selfless nature.

The parade had a special energy, so many smiling faces, more entries than we have ever had and it was all around a great day. Feel free to contact KC at cooleemeenews@gmail.com or call me at (336) 250-1133.

Whether you’re working on your free throw or just enjoying a few rounds with neighbors, it’s a great place to stay active.

Equipment Available—Just a Visit Away

Don’t have your own equipment? No problem. The Town of Cooleemee makes it easy for everyone to participate. Equipment for all courts and games can be checked out from Town Hall during office hours:
Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Stop by, grab what you need, and get outside to play!

A Community Resource for All Ages

The Davie County Senior Center has recognized the value of Cooleemee’s recreational assets, using the facilities to prepare for the Senior Games. Participants have made great use of the horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, bocce ball, cornhole, and pickleball courts as they trained for this celebrated event.

And they’ll be back! The courts and pits will once again come alive September 15–19 as seniors gather in Cooleemee for Senior Games Field Day and additional practice sessions before the NC Senior Games.

Recreation Builds Community

Cooleemee’s commitment to recreational opportunities reflects a broader mission to promote health, community engagement, and fun for residents of all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking for a new hobby, there’s something for you here in Cooleemee.

Come out, get moving, and make some memories—right here in your hometown.

June 2025 – Clerk’s Corner

Good morning, Cooleemee,

Happy Summertime! Although we aren’t officially there yet, the rising temperatures, increased humidity, and evening storms sure make it feel like summer. Please remember to stay cool, stay hydrated, take care of yourself and your loved ones (including your pets), and check in on your neighbors from time to time.

The office has been especially busy lately. You may have noticed that I didn’t send out a May report. We have a few things in the works to help with that. One update: we’ve posted a part-time position to assist during peak times and to help ensure continuity in my absence. If you or someone you know is interested, we will be conducting interviews later this month. Please send a letter of interest and any relevant work experience to scorriher@cooleemee.org.

We now have a design drafted for the new Community Center! Stop by Town Hall to take a look. It will be located near the Zachary House and the old police building, and will feature a design consistent with the current look and feel of the Town. At this time, we are projecting a groundbreaking for construction in September, as we finalize the library portion of the Center.

Join us for our 4th of July Parade and festivities! The parade begins Friday, July 4th, at 10 a.m., with fun activities to follow. We’re lining up vendors and a few surprises for the event. It’s exciting to know that next year’s celebration will take place primarily indoors—air conditioning included—thanks to the new Community Center!

This year’s festivities will include hot dogs, popsicles, a Slip ‘N Slide, and more.
If you or someone you know would like to be in the parade, it’s easy! Please arrive at Cooleemee Elementary School around 9 a.m. to line up. No pre-registration is required—we just want you to be there!

The Town has finalized the FY 2025–2026 budget. The Budget Message is available for viewing at Town Hall, and a Public Hearing has been scheduled for Monday, June 23, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Zachary House/Town Hall. Please note that the June Town Board Meeting has been rescheduled from June 16 to June 23 at 6 p.m., so both the regular meeting and the Public Hearing will be held the same evening.

Please note: Town Hall will close early on Friday, June 13, around 11 a.m., and will remain closed the week of June 16–20. We plan to reopen on Monday, June 23, at 8 a.m., as the Clerk will be on vacation.

During this time, you can still reach us via email at scorriher@cooleemee.org or jsmith@cooleemee.org for questions, concerns, or suggestions.

As always, if you have anything to discuss, bring to our attention, or ideas to improve the Town, don’t hesitate to reach out. You’re welcome to stop by and see me at the Zachary House at 131 Church St. We’re in the white building to the right of the main entrance. Look for the sign on the door that says “Town Hall.”

You can also call us at 336-284-2141 or email either address provided above to make your voice heard.

Thanks for all you do. Stay cool, and talk to you next month!

April 2025 Cooleemee Clerk’s Corner

Good Spring Morning, Cooleemee and Neighbors (even if it feels like winter again today!)

We’ve had a stretch of warm and dry weather recently, but thankfully we made it through just fine. The North Carolina burn ban was lifted last week, but please remember—a Town Burn Permit is still required if you live within the town limits.

Recreation is Blooming in Cooleemee

It’s great to see everyone enjoying the park, playground, and outdoor spaces! Folks are already making good use of the new pickleball court inside the tennis courts, and the basketball courts are buzzing with activity from kids and young adults. The newly painted shuffleboard pads have also seen some action.

If you’d like to use shuffleboard, pickleball, bocce, tennis equipment, or basketballs, stop by Town Hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. We’re also exploring a way to offer equipment check-out after hours—more info on that soon!

Community Center Update

The design phase of the new Community Center is well underway! Here’s what we know so far:

  • A public library and a small fitness center will be included. We’re still working on how to tailor the fitness area to seniors and ensure proper security and maintenance.
  • Reservable multipurpose rooms will be available and may host indoor recreational activities like cornhole, ping pong, and foosball.

More details to come as plans develop!

Water Treatment Facility Progress

The Main Street Water Treatment Facility remains on schedule. Davie County expects test operations to begin as early as late 2025, but certainly by early 2026. Once completed, Main Street will be repaved, making travel smoother again.

I know for those who live over that way or have family over in that area, it has been quite a burden, but bear with them as it wraps up in the coming months, and hopefully you all can resume living without construction and rough roads soon.

Easter Block Party – Save the Date!

Join us for a fun-filled Easter Block Party hosted by the Cooleemee Fire Department and The Bridge Church on  Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Zachary House.

Enjoy:

  • Free food
  • Cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones
  • Inflatables
  • A “Candy Rain” event
  • An egg hunt for younger children

Church Street will be closed during the event, so please park at the Fire Department. If you’re unable to walk over, shuttle service will be provided. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles will be parked along the street, and it’s important not to block them in case they need to get out to respond to anything or anyone.

Fire Department Updates

Velvet Hackett is your new Cooleemee Fire Chief! She has a few important safety events coming up:
